Chief Joseph, or "Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt" was the "Guardian of the Wallowa," a man who transformed the act of retreat into a legendary display of tactical genius and moral fortitude. He was the keeper of a promise—a sacred vow never to sell the "Valley of Winding Waters." He sought peace with a creative patience that frustrated his adversaries, always seeking a way to protect his people’s sovereignty without shedding blood. His fellow tribesmen respected him as a "Peace Chief" whose wisdom was as deep as the canyons he called home. His famous words—"From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever"—were not a declaration of defeat to his tribesmen; they were an act of supreme sacrifice. His achievement was the preservation of the Nez Perce bloodline.
